Iowa Dispatcher Honored for Guiding Highway Childbirth Over the Phone

A 911 dispatcher in Iowa has been honored for her crucial role in guiding a woman through childbirth on the side of a highway. Andrea Ring, a veteran dispatcher with 26 years of experience, provided calm instructions over the phone as the emergency unfolded.

The incident occurred on March 5 along Highway 18 near Dickens, Iowa. Ring received a frantic call from a man whose girlfriend had gone into labor while they were traveling. It quickly became apparent the couple would not reach the hospital in time.

Ring, a mother of five herself, stayed on the line and expertly talked the family through the delivery. By the time emergency crews arrived at the scene, the baby had already been born safely on the roadside.

Local authorities and emergency responders later surprised Ring with a “Stork Pin,” an honor traditionally given in emergency medical services for assisting during childbirth. A Facebook post announcing the recognition praised her for calmly guiding and supporting the family.

The achievement was noted as particularly remarkable because dispatchers reportedly do not receive formal training for handling emergency childbirth situations. Dispatch Supervisor Mel Peterson commented that Ring’s personal experience as a mother was instrumental.

Both mother and baby were transported safely to the hospital following the successful delivery. The story gained an emotional conclusion when the baby’s mother, Brianna Ziegler, responded to the online post.

Ziegler thanked Ring, identifying herself as the mother of the “highway 18 baby.” She wrote that Ring’s calm voice and expert knowledge were exactly what they needed in that critical moment.

The recognition has highlighted the vital but often unseen role of dispatchers in emergency response. For Andrea Ring, the experience provided a memorable ending to a call, allowing her to help bring a new life safely into the world from miles away.
